Anecdote 5: 心配なお婆さん (A Worried Grandmother)

Grammar used:

  • つもり (Plan to / Intend to (future intention).)
  • ないでください (Please don’t ~ (polite prohibition).)
  • まだ (Still / Not yet (continuing or incomplete action).)
  • 前に (Before ~ (sequence of actions).)
  • んです (For explanation/emphasis (spoken clarification).)

つもり

Meaning: Plan to ~ / Intend to ~

  • Verb (dictionary form) + つもりです (for future plans)
  • Verb (ない-form) + つもりです (for intentions not to do something)

(I plan to go to Japan next year.)

今日、テレビを見ないつもりです。
(I intend not to watch TV today.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝お婆さんは「じゃ、三日間休むつもりです!」と言った。❞
(Grandma said, “Then, I plan to rest for three days!”)

Note:

  • Used when strongly deciding on a future action.
  • Saying つもりでした (past tense) does not mean you actually did it—just that you had planned to.

ないでください

Meaning: Please don’t do ~ (Used to politely ask someone not to do something)

Formation:

  • Verb (ない-form) + でください

Examples:
ここで写真を撮らないでください。

(At the hospital, the doctor said, “Please don’t overdo it.”)

Note:

  • Stronger than just “辞めてください” (please stop), but still polite.
  • If used in casual speech, it’s often shortened to ないで (e.g.,「さわらないで!」 → “Don’t touch it!”)

まだ

Meaning: Still / Not yet

Formation:

  • まだ + Positive verb → Still doing something
  • まだ + Negative verb (ていません / ない) → Not yet done

Examples:

(I’m still studying.)

まだ昼ご飯を食べていません。
(I haven’t eaten lunch yet.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝でも、一週間後、まだ痛かった。❞
(But after a week, it still hurt.)

Note:

  • まだ + positive form = Continuing action
  • まだ + negative form = Action hasn’t happened yet
  • Different from もう, which means “already.”

前に

Meaning: Before ~ (Indicates an action that happens before another action)

Formation:

  • Noun + の + 前に → Before (a noun event)
  • Verb (dictionary form) + 前に → Before doing ~

Examples:
寝る前に、本を読みます。
(Before sleeping, I read a book.)

テストの前に、沢山勉強しました。
(Before the test, I studied a lot.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ 歩く前に、ストレッチをしなかったからかもしれない。❞
(Before walking, I might not have stretched.)

Note:

  • Different from てから, which means “after” instead of “before.”
  • 前に focuses on what happens first in a sequence.

んです

Meaning: Explanation or emphasis (Used to give reasons or emphasize a situation)

Formation:

  • Verb (plain form) + んです
  • い-adjective + んです
  • な-adjective / Noun + なんです

Examples:

(Why were you late?)

昨日は雨だったんです。
(It was raining yesterday, you see.)
