Anecdote 14: 内側と外側 (Inside and Outside)

ある日、遊園地に行った。ジェットコースターに乗る時、友達が言った。「内側の席にする?外側にする?」私は外側にした。景色がよく見えるから!

でも、乗ってすぐ、「しまった!」と思った。スピードが凄く速い!風が強くて、帽子が飛んだ!友達は大笑いした。「だから内側にすればよかったのに!」

乗った後、お土産店に行った。新しい帽子を買った。でも、まだドキドキしたまま。もう一回乗りたい?うーん…考え中

Grammar Used:

  • しまった (Oh no! I messed up!)
  • すればよかった (should have done something)
  • たまま (while remaining in a state)
  • 考え中 (currently thinking)
  • だから (so; therefore)

しまった

Meaning: Oh no! I messed up! (Used when realising a mistake)

Formation:

  • しまった! (Standalone exclamation)
  • しまった + Sentence (Expresses regret about an action)

しまった、電車に乗り遅れた!

Notes:

  • Used when realizing something bad has already happened.
  • More casual and emotional than “間違えた” (I made a mistake).

すればよかった

Meaning: Should have done ~ (Expresses regret about something you didn’t do)

Formation:

  • Verb (ば-form) + よかった

Examples:
もっと勉強すればよかった!
(I should have studied more!)

コートを着ればよかった。寒い!
(I should have worn a coat. It’s cold!)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝だから内側にすればよかったのに!❞

Notes:

  • Adds のに for extra frustration (すればよかったのに! → “I really should have done that!”).
  • Opposite of しなければよかった (I shouldn’t have done it).

たまま

Meaning: While remaining in a state (Describes something left unchanged)

Formation:

  • Verb (た-form) + まま
  • Noun + の + まま

Examples:
靴を履いたまま、部屋に入らないでください。
(Don’t enter the room with your shoes on!)

テレビをつけたまま寝てしまった。
(I fell asleep with the TV on.)

Notes:

  • Used when something stays unchanged or an action is done while keeping another condition.
  • Different from ながら, which focuses on simultaneous actions.

考え中

Meaning: Currently thinking / Considering

Formation:

  • Verb (dictionary form) + 中 (Used to describe an ongoing action)
  • 考え + 中 (Currently thinking about something)

Examples:
新しい仕事を考え中です。
(I’m thinking about a new job.)

週末の予定、まだ考え中。
(I’m still thinking about my weekend plans.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝うーん…考え中!❞
(Hmm… I’m thinking about it!)

Notes:

  • Works like 勉強中 (currently studying) or 仕事 中 (currently working).
  • More casual than 考えています, but both mean “thinking.”

だから

Meaning: So; Therefore (Expresses cause and effect)

Formation:

  • Sentence 1 + だから + Sentence 2

Examples:
雨が降っている。だから、傘を持って行く。
(It’s raining. So, I’ll bring an umbrella.)

高い!だから買わない。
(It’s expensive! That’s why I won’t buy it.)

Sentence from Anecdote:

Notes:

  • だから is casual. A more formal version is ですから.
  • Used to explain a reason before giving a conclusion.
