Anecdote 2: 悪戯な指 (Mischievous Fingers)

美術の時間、絵を描いた。でも、インクを溢した!指がまっくろ!「しまった!」

先生がいます。「手を洗いに行ってもいいよ」と言った。急いで洗った。でも、まだ落ちない!「こんなこと、初めて!」

教室に戻ったけれども、指はまだ黒い!友達が「どうしたの?」と聞いた。「洗ったけれども、まだ黒い!」すると、友達が言った。「それ、消えるまで一週間かかるよ!」

私はがっかりしたけれども、仕方がない。「これから、もっと気をつけよう!」そう思った。

Grammar Used:

  • (が)います (Existence of living things (people, animals).)
  • こんなこと (such a thing; something like this)
  • から (Because (reason) / From (starting point).)
  • まで (Until (time/condition) / Up to (place/extent).)
  • けれども (But / Although (formal contrast).)

(が)います

Meaning: There is ~ (for living things); Someone exists

Formation:

  • Person/Animal + がいます → There is (a living thing) / Someone is here

Examples:
教室に先生がいます。
(There is a teacher in the classroom.)

公園に犬がいます。
(There is a dog in the park.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ 先生がいます。「手を洗いに行ってもいいよ」と言った。❞
(There is a teacher. “You may go wash your hands,” they said.)

Note:

  • Used only for living things.
  • For inanimate objects, use があります (机があります → There is a desk).

こんなこと

Meaning: Such a thing; Something like this

Formation:

  • こんなこと + Sentence → Something like this happened
  • こんなこと +
    • 初めて → First time experiencing this
    • 出来ない → Can’t do this
    • ある → There is this kind of thing
    • ない → There isn’t this kind of thing

Examples:
こんなこと、初めて!
(Something like this has never happened before!)

こんなこと言いたくないけど…
(I don’t want to say something like this, but…)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ こんなこと、初めて! ❞
(Something like this has never happened before!)

Note:

  • こんな is used for things close to the speaker, while そんな and あんな are used for things near the listener or far from both.

から

Meaning: Because ~; From ~

Formation:

  • Reason + から + Result → Because ~, (something happened)
  • Starting Point + から + Ending Point → From ~ to ~

Examples:
雨が降ったから、外に行けません。
(Because it rained, I can’t go outside.)

ここから駅まで歩きます。
(I will walk from here to the station.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ これから、もっと気をつけよう! ❞
(From now on, I’ll be more careful!)

Note:

  • Used to explain reasons or show a starting point.
  • More casual than ので, which is softer and polite.

まで

Meaning: Until ~; Up to ~

Formation:

  • Verb (dictionary form) + まで → Until (action happens)
  • Noun + まで → Until (time/place)

Examples:
12時まで勉強します。
(I will study until 12 o’clock.)

駅まで歩きます。
(I will walk to the station.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ それ、消えるまで一週間かかるよ! ❞
(That will take a week to disappear!)

Note:

  • Different from までに, which means “by (a deadline)” (7時までに来てね → Come by 7 o’clock).

けれども

Meaning: But; Although (Used for contrasts)

Formation:

  • Sentence 1 + けれども + Sentence 2

Examples:
雨が降っているけれども、試合はあります。
(It’s raining, but the match will still happen.)

この料理は辛いけれども、美味しい!
(This dish is spicy, but it’s delicious!)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ 洗ったけれども、まだ黒い! ❞
(I washed it, but it’s still black!)

Note:

  • More formal than けど, which is common in casual speech.
  • Can be used at the beginning of a sentence to soften disagreement.
