Anecdote 6: 嚔が止まらない! (I Can’t Stop Sneezing!)

ある日、私は公園で遊んだ。風が強かった。でも、元気だから大丈夫!それから、家に帰った、嚔が出た。「はくしょん!」一回だけ。気にしなかった。でも、すぐに何回も嚔をした!

「どうして?」と思った。少し熱もあった。お母さんが「風邪を引いたのかもしれない」と言った。「ゆっくり休んだら?」でも、私は「大丈夫!まだ宿題をしなきゃ!」と言った。

次の日、もっと酷くなった!鼻水が止まらない!お母さんは言った。「ほらね?」私はしょんぼりした。

先生に「今日、学校に行かない方がいいですか?」と聞いた。先生が言った。「もちろん!ゆっくり休んでね。」でも、私は「薬を買いに行くのは大丈夫ですか?」と聞いた。先生が笑って、「誰かに買ってもらいなさい!」と言った。

Grammar Used:

  • 時 (when; at the time)
  • 何回も (many times; repeatedly)
  • なきゃ (must do (casual speech))
  • ほら (Look! See? (used to emphasise something))
  • に行く (Go to do ~ (purposeful movement).)

Meaning: When; At the time of ~ (Used to indicate the time something happens)

Formation:

  • Verb (dictionary form / た-form) + 時 → When doing / When did
  • い-adjective + 時
  • な-adjective + な + 時
  • Noun + の + 時

Examples:
雨が降る時、傘を持って行きます。
(When it rains, I bring an umbrella.)

子供の時、よく公園で遊びました。
(When I was a child, I often played in the park.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝それから、家に帰った時、嚔が出た。❞
(Then, when I got home, I sneezed.)

Note:

  • た-form + 時 → Action happened before the main event. (家に帰った時、雨が降っていた。 → When I got home, it was raining.)
  • Dictionary form + 時 → Action happens after / during the main event. (家に帰る時、コンビニに行った。 → When I was going home, I went to a convenience store.)

何回も

Meaning: Many times; Repeatedly

Formation:

  • 何回も + Verb

Examples:
この映画は何回も見ました。
(I’ve watched this movie many times.)

先生に何回も質問しましたが、分かりません。
(I asked the teacher many times, but I still don’t understand.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝でも、すぐに何回も嚔をした!❞
(But soon, I sneezed many times!)

Note:

  • Similar expressions include 何度も (more formal) and 沢山 (general meaning of “a lot,” not necessarily repeated times).
  • Can be used positively (何回も行きたい!→ I want to go many times!) or negatively (何回も言ったのに!→ I told you so many times!).

なきゃ

Meaning: Must do (Casual contraction of なければならない / なければいけない)

Formation:

  • Verb (ない-form, drop い) + なきゃ

Examples:
早く寝なきゃ!
(I have to sleep early!)

勉強しなきゃ、日本語が上手にならない。
(I have to study, or I won’t get good at Japanese.)

Sentence from Anecdote:

Note:

  • Super casual! Used mainly in spoken Japanese.
  • Can be softened by adding ならない / いけない at the end (行かなきゃならない = “I must go”).

ほら

Meaning: Look! See? (Used to emphasise something or draw attention)

Formation:

  • ほら + Sentence / Gesture

Examples:
ほら、雨が降って来たよ!
(See! It started raining!)

ほら、気をつけてって言ったでしょ?
(Look, I told you to be careful, didn’t I?)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝お母さんは言った。「ほらね?」❞
(Mom said, “See?” (I told you so!))

Note:

  • Often used when proving a point (“I was right!”).
  • Can be used for encouragement too! (ほら、頑張って!→ Look, keep going!)
  • Spoken only, not used in writing (except for dialogue).

に行く

Meaning: Go to do ~ (Indicates movement with a purpose)

Formation:

  • Verb (stem form) + に行く → Go to do (something)
  • Verb (stem form) + に来る → Come to do (something)
  • Verb (stem form) + に帰る → Return to do (something)

Examples:
スーパーにパンを買いに行く。
(I’m going to the supermarket to buy bread.)

友達に会いに来ました。
(I came to meet my friend.)

家に本を取りに帰る。
(I’m going home to get my book.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ でも、私は「薬を買いに行くのは大丈夫ですか?」と聞いた。❞
(But I asked, “Is it okay to go buy medicine?”)

Note:

  • The verb must be in its stem form (買う→買いに行く).
  • に行く / に来る / に帰る always express purposeful movement.
