Anecdote 17: 四季の中で一番好きな季節 (My Favourite Season Among the Four Seasons)

私は秋が一番好き!紅葉が美しいし、楓の葉が風に舞うのを見るとワクワクする。でも、冬の前に準備しないといけない

去年、寒波が来て、寒すぎて外に出られなかった。でも、今年は暖流の影響で少し暖かいらしい。だから、湖畔を歩くことにした。

友達は星座を見るのが上手。夜空を見上げて、色々な星の名前を教えてくれた。でも、寒いから、長くは見られなかった。

次の日、渓谷へ行こうと思った。でも、急に雨が降った!傘を持たないで出かけたから、びしょ濡れになった。

それでも、雨の後の虹色の空は綺麗だった。湖畔の水もキラキラしていた。私は暫く眺めていた。やっぱり、自然は素晴らしい!

でも

Meaning: But; However; Even if (Used to introduce contrast or an alternative)

Formation:

  • Sentence 1 + でも + Sentence 2 → But ~ / However ~
  • Noun + でも → Even ~

(It’s cold, but I want to play outside. However, I might catch a cold!)

このレストランは高い。でも、美味しい!

Notes:

  • でも can start a sentence, unlike けど, which is used to connect two clauses.

ないで

Meaning: Without doing ~; Don’t do ~ (Expresses not doing an action)

Formation:

  • Verb (ない-form) + で → Without doing ~ / Don’t do ~

Examples:
傘を持たないで出かけた。
(I went out without an umbrella.)

朝ご飯を食べないで学校に行きました。
(I went to school without eating breakfast.)

Sentence from Anecdote:
❝ 傘を持たないで出かけたから、びしょ濡れになった。❞
(Since I went out without taking an umbrella, I got soaked.)

Notes:

  • ないで means “without doing,” while ずに is a more formal version (食べずに出かけた → “I left without eating”).

ないといけない

Meaning: Must do ~; Have to do ~ (Expresses obligation)

Formation:

  • Verb (ない-form) + といけない → Must do ~ / Have to do ~

Examples:
宿題をしないといけない。
(I have to do my homework.)

早く寝ないといけませんよ。
(You must go to bed early.)

Sentence from Anecdote:

Notes:

  • More conversational than なければならない, which is more formal.
  • ないと alone can also mean “must do” casually (行かないと! → I have to go!).

のが上手

Meaning: Good at ~ (Describes skill or ability)

Formation:

  • Verb (dictionary form) + のが上手 → Good at doing ~

Examples:
彼は歌うのが上手です。
(He is good at singing.)

妹は絵を描くのが上手。
(My younger sister is good at drawing.)

Notes:

  • Opposite is のが下手 (苦手 can also be used for “not good at” in a softer way).

ている

Meaning: Ongoing action; Habit; State (Used to express continuous actions or conditions)

Formation:

  • Verb (て-form) + いる → Currently doing / habitual action / state

Examples:
今、勉強しています。
(I am studying now.)

彼は日本に住んでいます。
(He lives in Japan.)

(I was gazing at it for a while.)

Notes:

  • For repeated or habitual actions, use ている (毎日運動している
    → I exercise every day).
  • For changes in state, use ている (ドアが開いている
    → The door is open).
