春になると、藤や蓮の花が咲く。湖畔で紫陽花を見るのが大好き!でも、どうして春の花はこんなに綺麗なんだろう?

夏は猛暑だけど、浜辺で泳ぐのは楽しい!ある日、杉の木の下で休もうとした。でも、葉っぱがチクチクする。そこで、苔の上に座るが楽なだと気づいた。

秋の紅葉は素晴らしい。銀杏や楓がカラフル!渓谷に行ったけど、道がちょっと狭かった。でも、頑張って歩いたら、凄い景色が見えた!

冬は寒波の所為で、とても寒い。雪が降ると、湖畔も凍る。私はまだ氷河を見ていません。だから、次の冬は、氷河を見に行くことにする

Notes:

  • 方 is used for how to do something, whereas 方法 means “method” in a broader sense.

けど

Meaning: But; Although (Used to contrast two ideas)

Formation:

  • Sentence 1 + けど + Sentence 2 → Although ~, ~
  • Sentence 1 + けど… → Well, but… (trailing off in speech)

Examples:
このレストランは美味しいけど、高い。
(This restaurant is delicious, but expensive.)

昨日雨だったけど、サッカーをしました。
(Although it rained yesterday, we played soccer.)

Notes:

  • More casual than しかし, which is used in formal writing.

まだ~ていません

Meaning: Haven’t done yet (Used to express an action that hasn’t happened yet)

Formation:

  • まだ + Verb (て-form) + いません → Haven’t done ~ yet

Examples:
まだ宿題をしていません。
(I haven’t done my homework yet.)

まだ映画を見ていません。
(I haven’t watched the movie yet.)

Notes:

  • まだ means “still” or “yet.” If used with a positive verb, it means “still doing” (e.g., まだ雨が降っています → “It’s still raining.”).

にする

Meaning: To decide on; To choose (Used for making a decision)

Formation:

  • Noun + にする → To choose (something)
  • Verb (dictionary form) + ことにする → To decide to do (something)

Examples:
飲み物はコーヒーにします。
(I’ll have coffee.)

来週から運動することにします。
(I’ve decided to start exercising next week.)

Notes:

  • ことにする focuses on a decision the speaker has made.
  • ことになる is used when the decision is made by someone else or circumstances.
